I can remember sitting in high school history class having discussions about Alexander Burr and Sonic Youth with Derek Robertson, the bass player for Kommie Kilpatrick. I also remember dancing in rock n’ roll frathouses with longtime friends Zak Frieling and Teddy Stavridis. Now one of my few memories with Kit Sabo, the guitarist, involves sitting in an apartment watching people play Mortal Kombat before a Black ...Midwest Music: Kommie Kilpatrick

Starting out with a Velvet Underground/Talking Heads meets Replacements style of retro-sixties rock, Ariel Aparicio calls up the still-living spirit of Iggy Pop. The Hired Guns don’t do much for Ariel in creating a coherent sound, making the entirety of “Punk Rock Girl” sound more like a mashup of different half-assed tracks instead of something put forth as one specific entity. Maintaining some of the same stylistic, ...Ariel Aparicio w/ The Hired Guns – Frolic F*** (CD)

The Distractions EP, coming in at six songs, may not be the effort that finally brings ...The Loved Ones – Distractions EP (CD)

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Sid Vicious, who was the bass guitarist for the Sex Pistols. [God, I feel really, really old]. He died of a heroin overdose on February 1, 1979—the same night he was released on bail from Riker’s Island. He’d spent 55 days there after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, who died of a single stab wound to the abdomen and bled to death ...Death of a Punk: Remembering Sid Viscous

New diatribe Blog Entry : Music to code by: The Gaslight Anthem I don’t read record reviews, or music magazines, or music web sites. I rarely watch music videos, and when I am in the car I usually listen to my own cds. It’s rare that I will ever be drawn into the hype around a band because I just don’t have the time or spend the necessary energy in places where hype is on display. So, a few weeks back ...2/1/2009 Music to Code By: The Gaslight Anthem

It really seemed like the most improbable thing ever that Thorns of Life could actually play in the basement of the Spencer King House in Santa Rosa. It’s more like an interrogation chamber than a basement down there, but in spite of our repeated warnings to the band in the last weeks that the downstairs was a tiny, 10-foot-by-15-foot concrete cell, they kept shouting their approval at us. It’s small? Sure! It’s ...Interview: Blake Schwarzenbach, Thorns of Life

Jan 29th, 2009by Will. Punk rock poet is a phrase seemingly bantered about a little too frequently for my liking. I have heard it in reference to Brett Adams of The Riot Before. And after numerous listens to Fists Buried In Pockets I can see why. The Riot Before aren’t your typical cookie-cutter political punk rock band. Adams certainly has a way with words as he tackles numerous worthy lyrical themes. Adams should ...The Riot Before: Fists Buried In Pockets
